Fabric Passion Forum Share Your Project - Lysa *LINK* *PIC* Posted By: Dana Lacy Chapman Greetings!
We’ve all had the experience, I imagine, of turning to quilting as a relief from stress, a meditative time to ponder events in our lives, or memorialize someone in some way. Lysa shares with us the story of “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.”
“I finished this quilt last night and hung it this morning to stretch out and take its picture. The pattern started out as Nancy Cabot's Indian Mat, page 151-1 of Jinny Beyer's enormous book of patterns. I altered it some, and it is just that repeated. The border is 1/2 of Delectable Mountains. The figure in the top right is stenciled and painted. The hanging is about 5' x 5'.
“Several of) the fabrics are (from eQuilter, including) the Native American piece that I think I bought the last of it. The skeletons started the color scheme, but the daisy, floral stripe cut apart in many ways added depth and all kinds of possibilities. The touch of green allowed a pale, soft, floral green as a background.
“And the inspiration was again my husband. Starting in 2004 with an ACL repair that went bad (followed by several additional serious health issues), it has been a rough 8 years for me and our children. ‘Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee’ is the name of this one… The Native American fabric is the tie in to the real event that is all.
“I have become a chain quilter. In the past 6 months, I have created 4 wall hangings, 5' x 5', all by hand. I piece and quilt by hand. Such is my stress reduction need! I start the new one today, for our 17 year old son. Called ‘Young Man's Fancy’. Amazing patterns appear when you put one block against another and change the defining block lines. All your fabrics will be in this one. Then, there is the autobiographical one that keeps popping up in my head!”
Lysa Intrator
Thank you so much for sharing your quilt, Lysa! It is a marvelous piece, and the colors are striking. We appreciate the list of planned works, as I think we all have such lists. There is no doubt in my mind that quilting is therapeutic!
We do have copies of Jinny Beyer’s reference book on blocks, “The Quilter's Album of Patchwork Patterns - 4,050 Pieced Blocks”:
Nancy Cabot was an interesting contributor of block designs… but that is a whole other story!
Wishing you and your family all the best.
Stitching Smiles!
