The ladybug prayer quilt came about when a friend of mine developed cancer. I wanted to give her something that would comfort her through the tough days ahead.

From the very start of this quilt, I could see Godıs leading, from choosing the colors of material to the final design. Itıs bright happy full of flowers, Ladybugs, scriptures and color! Plus, while sewing it I was able to focus on the prayers she needed.

Another friend of mine did the actual quilting on this quilt; she put a flower pattern all over the quilt, which pulled the whole thing together.

When I gave my friend the quilt, she was overwhelmed and kept saying, ‘I think Iım going to cry: look at all the red, thatıs my favorite color.’ (I had no idea it was her favorite color, in fact she told me one time she liked green) I was worried she wouldnıt like all the red on it. She kept giving me hugs and saying how she would wrap herself in it each time she needed comfort.

A couple of things I learned (while making the quilt:) Take a quick photo with your phone of the squares laid out before you sew them. That way if your cat, or child, messes the order, all you have to do is look at the photo on your phone. Also, I have found it gives me a good idea of how the quilt should or should not be put together.

I also learned if you are cutting different widths of the same material for strips; donıt put them near each other. I had to trim and square some of mine, realizing too late, instead of a 2 inch I had grabbed the 3 inch strip.

I have completed 3 prayer quilts so far, each time Iıve been filed with awe at the response. I can’t wait until the next one.

And thanks for sharing this special quilt, JoEllen! It’s true that making one gives the chance to meditate on things. And, I like your idea of photographs to experiment with placement (and keep record!).

We wish all the best for your friend!
