Fabric Passion Forum Share Your Project - Sandy *LINK* *PIC* Posted By: Dana Lacy Chapman Greetings!
Sandy has shared a quilt she made for her granddauther. She explains:
”My Granddaughter loves daffodils and I decided to turn one of my art sketches into a quilt. It didn't take long to enlarge the drawing using my drafting skills (professionally, I was a drafter for 36 years) to scale it to the size I needed. In 2009, I had purchased a quilting book that taught how to use the French Braid pattern for borders around a central panel.
“Finding the compatible fabrics was challenging too. I pulled several from my stash but I also wanted some daffodil fabric to highlight the theme of the quilt. The four fabrics I found were all ordered from eQuilter.com
“I used a large roll of paper to draw my enlarged daffodil design on. I then cut one piece out at a time. I had chosen to use color as shading and had divided each petal into 1 to 3 different shades of yellow to get the depth of the colors.
“I worked on pieces approximately 8" large square of the blue. It was impossible to use a standard size and just did the best I could. When I had the design surrounded by the blue, I added enough blue fabric the normal way to arrive at the correct size.
“I added borders and a stripe fabric of tiny daffodils as a frame. I used a sharp pointed ink pen with fabric paint for narrow lines and a stiff brush for shading. I really was surprised how little it took to create the shading that I needed to make the daffodils appear the way I wanted them too.
“I brushed on highlight paint on the flower pot to give it more of a 3-D appearance. That piece is appliquéd on rather than paper pieced. I added iron-on red crystals for the pistils that showed in two of the blossoms. I also appliquéd 3 butterflies and a bee onto the panel using gold thread to add a little glitter to the quilt.
”I decided to quilt the blue sky with a 3" squares that made it look like the plant was in front of a tiled wall. I hand quilted just where needed on the blossoms. The French Braid borders were sewn in the ditch on each bar. It took about 145 hours to complete this quilt and my Granddaughter loved it.”
Sandy
Thank you for sharing this quilt and your description of how it was made, Sandy. The quilt is beautiful, and I am pleased that your granddaughter loved it! We all measure the time and energy we put into a quilt in different ways. The smile of the receiver is, to me, always an important way to judge the success of the effort!
Daffodils are such wonderful harbingers of spring. It is nice to know they are blooming somewhere in the world, even though we here in Boulder are getting ready for fall.
