Fabric Passion Forum Share Your Project - Jan *PIC* Posted By: Dana Lacy Chapman Greetings,
Jan sent a picture of a quilt she finished recently, and it really struck a familiar chord with me. She explains:
“Like many hobbies, I guess, one not only learns about the process - in this case, of how to sew a quilt - but if sufficiently curious, about other interesting aspects of life/history.
“For example, I knew the pattern I compiled across the middle of the quilt was called 'Seminole' piecing, and was vaguely aware it related to Native American Indians. I then became curious about its origins, so looked up several web sites. I discovered so much fascinating history and information about the tribe and its famous Seminole patchwork!
“I also discovered that some of the other strips I pieced would also be described as 'Seminole', e.g. the brown zigzag front bottom border.
”...I made the quilt (as a gift for) my son's 40th birthday. His main interest - having spent a year at school in Oregon - is American native Indians, their culture and their jewelry, and for many years he has coveted an Indian blanket we purchased whilst we were there:
“He just loves it and I too am delighted with the result. I split up the panel at every section and rotated half of them; it was a lot of work but I really enjoyed the process.
“So it seems we've come full circle, and for that I thank you!”
Thank you for sharing this fabulous quilt with us, as well as your story. It struck a familiar chord with me because I love the Seminole piecing, too, and followed a similar path to learning about the Seminoles as I learned the technique!
The colors work so well together, and the quilt turned out so well using this method! What a great gift for your son, and I’m certainly glad to know he loves it!
Stitching Smiles!
