Fabric Passion Forum Share Your Project - Sandy *LINK* *PIC* Posted By: Dana Lacy Chapman Greetings,
A while back, Jan shared a quilt with the eQuilter Fabric Passion Forum that inspired her to research the Seminole Indian history.
Sandy had a similar experience with a Lone Star quilt. She explained, “I read about a quilt with an Indian theme on the Forum that stirred memories of one I had done in the summer of 2011. The same thing happened to me when I decided to do a traditional quilt for a step-daughter and her husband that was retiring to New Mexico.
“About 100 years ago as buffalo disappeared from the plains, robbing the tribes of material for making warm blankets they turned to a European tradition of quilting. The Sioux tribes especially adopted the Lone Star Pattern.(The star represents many concepts to Native Americans.)
” I found (at eQuilter a) suitable fabric showing all the colors I planned to use. The fabric depicted ponies running across a sunset sky with Indian symbols of pottery, Indian blankets, and moccasins. It was about as perfect as I imagined I would find.
“I began the quilt and in my usual way, immediately made my first major mistake. I had misread the pattern as to the size of the double diamond. Rather than discard the fabric I decided to use the small pieces, repeating the design into the corner blocks. It worked out amazingly well. Sometimes mistakes can mean better opportunities. It is strange how quilting is a lot like life.
“My step-daughter and her husband were very surprised by this gift and told me again and again how much they appreciated my time and effort to give them a quilt that went with the theme of the South Western decor that had such meaning to the Indian culture.”

Thank you for sharing this wonderful quilt. Your email contained a good deal more information explaining the history and how meaningful the design and colors were to the project. While I could not include it all, I do think that all helps to make the most of the process in making a quilt. We really bond with the process, think on the information as we work, and let that guide decisions we make about the design.
Fussy cutting this fabric really accentuated the color and design:
